After-school clubs

HJK organizes after-school clubs for 1st and 2nd grade children and 3rd–9th grade special education children on weekdays from noon to 5 pm. After-school clubs are organized throughout Helsinki in twelve locations. Overall there are around 700 children participating in after-school clubs at HJK. The Education Division of the City of Helsinki monitors the after-school club operations in Helsinki.

The clubs operate during the school year. Clubs are on a break during school holidays. HJK organizes camps during school holidays for which you can enroll your child in. Ask more about the camp activities at leiritoiminta@hjk.fi.

The principle of HJK’s after-school clubs is to offer activities for children that are of quality, sports and children centered, and trustworthy. We organize versatile instructed or independent sports activities for children. Football is not emphasized in the daily activities of the clubs.

Fundamentals of HJK after-school clubs:

  • Children’s needs come first
  • Systematic activities
  • Regular exercise and movement through versatile activities
  • Promoting the children’s well-being in collaboration with the families
  • Social and group collaboration
  • Playfulness and open to choice

APPLYING TO AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS

The application period for the 2025–2026 semester is 17.3.–16.4.2025 primarily in Wilma. If the guardian does not yet have Wilma credentials, instructions can be found at hel.fi/wilma. Remember to apply for the after-school clubs during the application period.

For more detailed instructions on applying, the after-school club fees, and applying outside the application period click here.

The City of Helsinki will inform about the decisions regarding after-school clubs through mail in June–July 2025.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)

Can I change the ending time of the after-school club for my child?

Yes. Send an email iptoiminta@hjk.fi and inform us your child’s name, club and from which time to which you’d like to make the change. Also keep in mind that there is a one-month transition period when changing the activity time. Changing the activity time will affect the monthly fee.

I have a question about an invoice. Where should I ask?

Email us at iptoiminta@hjk.fi about your question. We will respond as quickly as possible.

I want to inform the club about a one-time change in my child’s schedule, food allergy, or who is going to pick them up from the club. Where do I send a message?

Always send a message or call the club’s phone. We will not send a child home or change anything in their after-school activities with the child’s own notification only.

How much daily activity and outdoor play is there each day at the clubs?

The clubs organize outdoor play and daily sports activities for at least an hour a day but oftentimes more. It is important to dress your child according to the weather for them to be safe and enjoy their time.
